Introductory Post

Hello!
My name is Kyle and I am brand new to the world of blogging so please lower your expectations right now!  I teach Physical Education at Steeple Run Elementary in District 203 in Naperville and have been there for the last 10 years.  I am married and have a 2 year old daughter at home who loves bike rides to the park and anything that is not sitting!

I enjoy learning about technology in education and the fast pace that it moves.  I have asked my elementary students for help with technology in my classroom many times and I will openly admit it. They are a great resource!  It's amazing to me how quick students can pick up on technology and also how their engagement level increases when using technology in the classroom.  Our district will be entirely 1:1 this next school year and I am excited to see how that changes things.  Our 2nd-5th graders will have Chromebooks and the K-1 grades will be 2:1 with ipads.  I think this will open up some new opportunities for our students in P. E. and I am excited to create some new ideas to incorporate technology into PE. My favorite technology tool in my classroom is undoubtedly connecting my school ipad to appleTV which is then projected on to a large screen.  I use this every single day with almost every class.  I'm looking forward to incorporating more technology in the future.

Stay tuned!

  1. Hi Kyle,
I like how you said your students are a great resource. I agree! I am sure they have taught me more about technology than I have taught them! I am also excited to see how things change once our district goes 1:1. I remember when I first started teaching and we would spend a half hour just trying to turn the computer on and log in. I am hoping these technology courses help me stay ahead of the curve, or at least, more willing to go around the curve where technology is concerned. I am excited to get your perspective from a different discipline and see ways that you will use technology in your classroom.
    Happy blogging!
    Ashley

  5. Hi, Kyle! I love the tone of your introduction--both humble and humorous...a great combo! You are right about the students being an excellent resource when it comes to technology. I will never be as current as they are.

  6. Kyle - welcome and great to have you in this class. I loved the saying on your t-shirt the first night - "Girl Power"! Congrats on baby girl #2! I'm interested to see how you have been using technology in your class, and what you will use from this class as well. Looking forward to learning and sharing with you and the rest of the class.

  7. Kyle,

Now that we are in our 4th class how do you feel about blogging at this point? I felt the same way as you originally. Blogging seemed out of my range of skills; however, now I feel pretty comfortable with it. It's creative, requires minimal time and is a great way to connect with parents.

I know you must appreciate things that require minimal time...having a child in itself is quite time consuming. Congratulations!

  9. Kyle,

I totally agree that the students are such a great technology resource. I feel like I am learning from them, and even more so their attitude. They are not intimidated by technology they don't know. I am really trying to be a little bit more like them. In the past I might see something really great but think that it was too challenging for me to attempt. However, I am trying to be a little bit more like the kids and give it a shot!

  10. Kyle, as a physical education teacher, incorporating technology into your instruction has to be a challenge. I'm impressed you've already implemented the use of Apple TV everyday in your instruction. I'm curious what you are doing with 'the screen' in your lessons. Also, do you plan to have your students bring their device to the gym? I look forward to hearing more about your plan to incorporate the use of technology to enhance your students' physical health.

  11. Kyle-

I always enjoy taking courses with fellow PE teachers, especially a tech course. I love the idea of using appleTV with the iPads through your PE classes. I look forward to hearing about your PE tech incorporation and techniques.
